Searching Eddy County Civil Dockets
New Mexico Case Lookup is the free public tool for current case information. No account is needed. No case number? Search by the name of a plaintiff, petitioner, defendant, or respondent. From there, narrow things down. Use court type, court location, civil category, filing date, or status. The official guide shows the civil category as CV. That example is not an Eddy County case-number format. Do not build a number from it.
A search can miss when the year or the court level is wrong. A magistrate case and its later District Court appeal sit in separate court records. Search each one on its own. Write down the exact case number, court, year, category, and status from any result you get. One limit matters here: Case Lookup shows no documents. It finds the case, but the full court file lives with the clerk.
- Search Case Lookup by party name or the exact case number.
- Choose the Eddy court location when it is known.
- Use the civil category, filing year, and status to narrow results.
- Open the matching register and note its case events and next setting.
- Ask the clerk for a permitted order, judgment, or other filed document.
Eddy County Civil Dockets Above $10,000
Civil claims above the magistrate limit belong to the Eddy County District Court, located at 102 N. Canal, Suite 240 in Carlsbad. The court's civil docket covers tort and contract claims. It also includes real-property, estates, domestic-relations, mental-health, appeal, and other general or exclusive categories. This is the court's own register. It is not the Eddy County Clerk's recording system.
An Eddy County District Court civil docket can list a complaint or petition, summons, answer, motion, scheduling order, notice of hearing, continuance, mediation, trial, judgment, decree, dismissal, garnishment, execution, or appeal. The category and court location tell you which register you are reading. A court calendar may show the next setting. It still does not replace the full civil event history.
The Fifth District court listing names the District Court as the countywide venue for any civil matter that belongs above the magistrate limit. So for larger claims in Eddy County, that is the docket to search.
Inside an Eddy County Civil Docket
The civil docket is a log of what the court has processed. It names the case, the parties, the category, the filing date, the status, and the timeline of pleadings and settings. For a closer look at the system fields, the official Odyssey case-detail training material walks through them without using a private Eddy case.
| Case header | Case number, filing date or year, court, division or judge, category, case style, and status. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Plaintiff or petitioner, defendant or respondent, and other roles such as intervenor or garnishee where applicable. |
| Chronology | Complaint, service return, answer, motion, response, hearing notice, reset, judgment, dismissal, or appeal. |
| Setting | Date, time, courtroom or location, judge or division, hearing type, and permitted party or attorney fields. |
| Document access | Public Case Lookup has no document images; clerk, IPRA, or qualifying registered access can be required. |
Read a status word with care. A default judgment, a final judgment, a decree, a nonsuit, and a dismissal are all different results. The filed order controls, so never assume the outcome from a short label alone.
Eddy County Civil Docket Limits
The Carlsbad and Artesia Magistrate Courts handle civil and landlord-tenant matters within their limited jurisdiction. The official court finder puts magistrate civil cases under $10,000. Landlord-tenant rights run from $0 to $10,000. Their civil dockets are not the same thing as the District Court register. Even the same people or the same property can appear in both court histories.
Carlsbad Magistrate Court sits at 1949 S. Canal. Artesia Magistrate Court is at 109 N. 15th. Holding a civil order or case number? First figure out which court issued it. If an appeal later lands in District Court, run the case lookup again there. The magistrate result will not carry the appeal history.
Each limited-jurisdiction court keeps its own filings and settings. A District Court civil docket does not continue a magistrate docket just because the dispute involves the same parties. For any request or search, pin down the court, the filing year, and the exact case number first. That one habit keeps a lower-court record from being mistaken for a District Court appeal or some other Eddy County civil matter.
| Court | Civil role | Search consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Eddy District Court | General civil matters and cases above the lower-court limit. | Use the District Court location and its case register. |
| Carlsbad or Artesia Magistrate | Limited civil and landlord-tenant matters within the stated limit. | Search the relevant magistrate location separately. |
| Municipal court | City ordinance, traffic, and petty-misdemeanor work. | It is not a general civil court register. |
A court calendar may list a hearing date. The civil docket does more, preserving the filings and the order of events. Use the case register when you need to match a summons, answer, motion, or judgment to the correct court file.
Civil Case Types on the Docket
A civil docket in District Court can hold contract and tort claims, property matters, domestic relations, estates, mental-health matters, and appeals. Informal or uncontested probate starts in Eddy County Probate Court instead. Once an estate is contested, it moves to District Court. The docket category helps here. It can tell a civil matter apart from a criminal or traffic case with similar party names.
The Fifth District civil forms library offers official resources. These cover pleading, summons, subpoena, interpreter, garnishment, eviction, and complaint materials. A forms collection will not show the current docket. What it does show is procedural paperwork. That paperwork often shows up later as entries in an Eddy County civil register.
When a docket entry names a pleading, a service document, or a post-judgment item, the civil forms resource is helpful context. It explains what those filings actually are.
Eddy County Civil Docket Forms
Start with the Fifth District forms library. Use it to name the exact document you want. Civil, criminal, appeals, probate, domestic-violence, self-representation, and accessibility materials all sit in one place. Browsing the categories first makes it easier to describe a record to a clerk. Requesting a civil copy? Name Eddy County District Court or the right magistrate court. Add the case number and year. Include the document title and date. Say whether you want a plain or certified copy.
Public Case Lookup shows no document images. A qualifying user may get more through re:SearchNM. An unsealed paper or electronic record can still be inspected at the court. It can also be requested through the proper custodian. An IPRA request must describe existing records with reasonable particularity. The court has no duty to conduct new research for you.
Browsing the library's categories first helps a requester describe a document precisely. Then contact the court that keeps the civil case file.
Civil Docket Settings and Hearings
A civil setting is one court event on the calendar, not the whole case history. The docket may show a hearing type, date, time, courtroom or location, judge or division, and permitted party or attorney data. Scheduling orders, notices of hearing, mediation events, trial settings, continuances, and resets can all appear in the register. If a date changes, read the later event.
The Fifth Judicial District hearing schedule may help with a near-term District Court or magistrate setting. Those schedule pages sit apart from Case Lookup. They are not historic registers or document portals. A written court notice still controls a party's obligation. When a web schedule and a notice differ, contact the court or division. Do not rely on the web result.
Eddy County Civil Docket Settings
The Fifth District Court Hearing Schedules index routes visitors to three schedules. These cover Eddy District Court, Carlsbad Magistrate, and Artesia Magistrate. The Artesia page covers hearings for the current day and six days ahead. It also warns that information can contain omissions. What it does not supply is a complete civil docket or an exportable date-range search.
A schedule entry can help you match a case number to a hearing. It is not a certified notice. Contact the court when a known setting is absent, moved, or unclear. Municipal court dates run through their own city channels. A city matter may not appear on the Fifth District schedule.
A court-date listing is a short-range scheduling aid. The civil case register remains the better source for earlier filings and later dispositions.
Civil Docket Access Rules
Rule 1-079 NMRA presumes public access to court records. That access covers the register of actions and docket entries, unless a rule or order limits it. Protected identifiers get redacted. The rule does not make every document downloadable through a public search result, and a lodged item is not treated as publicly filed material.
A sealed record is more than a closed one. Public Case Lookup omits document images, and some case types carry special limits. For an allowed copy, request the specific pleading, order, judgment, or register entries from the court holding the file. The electronic-record policy requires a no-charge courthouse means of electronic access. Printing can still carry a court copy charge.
Public access: Inspection and copying can be available without remote document images. Use the correct court clerk, not the county recording office, for an Eddy County civil case file.
Eddy County Civil Docket Entries
A docket entry is not the complaint, petition, order, or judgment behind it. The entry only reports a filing or court event. To obtain a civil document, ask the clerk for the named record or submit the judiciary IPRA form to the court custodian. A browser printout from a search screen is not a certified copy.
Older material can require a clerk request. Files older than five years may sit on microfilm. If an Eddy County civil search returns nothing, recheck the court and filing year first. Then ask the clerk. The record may be older, restricted, or outside the public electronic system. The countywide case lookup page covers the same Case Lookup tools used for criminal results.
